About Ryan Johnson

Ryan Johnson is a criminal defence lawyer based in Vancouver.

Ryan is a full-time instructor of criminal law, criminal evidence and expert witness evidence in the Forensic Science & Technology Department of a major Lower Mainland post-secondary institute. Ryan doesn’t take on every case, but he provides a high level of skill and service to the clients he works with.

Ryan’s focus is exclusively on criminal defence law. If you have been charged with a criminal offence, or are under investigation for a criminal offence, then contact Ryan and see if your case might be a good fit for Ryan to help you with.

Ryan has extensive experience in defending clients facing allegations of all types of assault (including domestic), uttering threats, shoplifting (theft under $5000), theft and fraud from employer, driving while prohibited, impaired driving, sexual assault, unlawful confinement, drug charges and other charges.

Ryan regularly works with clients who are under investigation and is often able to help clients navigate the police investigation without ultimately being charged with any offence.

Whether you would prefer your case to resolve without a trial, or you want to face the matter at a trial, Ryan knows the best approach to dealing with your case. He has years of experience in resolving criminal matters without a trial, often resulting in no permanent criminal record for the client, but he knows how to vigorously defend cases at trial when that is the option that makes the most the sense.

In 2016 Ryan was lead counsel on a complex two month trial at B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver. The trial had numerous pre-trial applications and encompassed developing areas of the criminal law. The trial was the result of one of the largest sexual assault investigations in British Columbia’s history and was covered extensively in the media.

Ryan Johnson grew up in the Lower Mainland. He graduated from Simon Fraser University with a degree in criminology before attending law school at the University of Victoria. Before practicing law, Ryan was involved with Restorative Justice for over 10 years, including as a practitioner dealing with Alternative Measures. His extensive experience with Restorative Justice has given him the knowledge needed to prepare unique proposals for Alternative Measures that have stopped the proceeding of formal criminal charges against his clients, even in cases involving more serious offences. He has previously worked for Crown Counsel as a prosecutor and that experience has helped him to understand the motivations of prosecuting lawyers.

Ryan takes great pride in caring for his clients and making sure they are informed and supported through each stage of the process. His varied life experiences help him to appreciate the needs and circumstances of his clients. Whether it involves avoiding criminal charges altogether, or taking your case to trial, Ryan is dedicated to helping his clients.
